Niger Bend Item: At a well in the Sahara Desert near Agadez

We sell these old pulleys, obtained from wells like this one. Once the bucket is full of water it is too heavy to be brought up by hand so the other end of the rope is attached to an animal, a mule or a camel, and it is pulled up across these pulleys. The length of the rope, as long as 100 meters, is the depth of the well. Wells are centers of social activity in the desert; everyone must bring his animals (mules, camels, and goats) every other day to the well for water.
